Stripping the Midget Part1
I’ve finally started work on the Midget after what seems like ages! I started by removing the bonnet followed by the headlights and surrounding chrome so I can remove the wings. I’ve also removed some of the inner panels and found that the inner wings have a replacement panel on there which doesn’t look too bad. Here’s a pic of the car without headlights and bonnet:
All the loose wires at the front are for the headlights, indicators and horn, it seems I have some spare wire for a 2nd horn too which might be useful for a bigger, louder one! Whilst I was at it I thought I’d label up the wires for future reference with small bits of paper and selloptape. I reckon this will come in handy since most of the wiring has been replaced and messes around with in the past and doesn’t follow the colours of the wiring diagrams! I also thought I’d share a photo of the engine bay for reference. There’s quite a bit of surface rust due to my water leak a couple of years ago but it’s pretty solid under there.
To get the project moving a bit faster, my Dad and I picked up a well used Engine Crane made by Epco. We had planned to use a block and chain with the rafters in the garage but we found they weren’t even fastened in to anything, best not to risk it! It looks to be fairly heavy duty and it can be unbolted from the base for storage if needed.
Hopefully I’ll get the wings off soon which will give me more space to work with under the bonnet. More to follow…
